An Afghan worker secures a giant banner showing former Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah as a candidate for the August presidential elections with vice-presidential running mates Homayun Shah Asifi , a former royalist and Chiragh Ali Chiragh, a famed surgeon , onto a building in Kabul on June 16, 2009. Election posters were going up in Afghanistan on June 16 as two months of campaigning officially kicked off for the August 20 presidential polls, being contested by 41 candidates. Large posters were being fixed to telegraph poles across Kabul featuring some of the leading candidates, including incumbent President Hamid Karzai former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah and former finance minister Ashraf Ghani.
