Los Angeles, UNITED STATES: Nicole Pederson from New York poses with a 1978 "Ballerina Barbie" during the 2006 National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention in Los Angeles 28 July, 2006. Nicole, the daughter of a lesbian feminist from the 1960's, begged her mother to buy her a Ballerina Barbie, her mother's consistently refusal. She bought the doll at the Convention for 70 USD, she said. Mattel Inc.'s Barbie doll debuted at New York Toy Fair in 1959 as a teenage fashion model sporting her now legendary ponytail hairstyle, black and white bathing suit, open toes shoes, sunglasses and hoop earrings. The 2006 Convention has been organized by local doll clubs of California with the attendance of hundred of dealers and collectors from different parts of the US and the world.
